Consumer Unit Upgrades from Willett Electrical Services Ltd
1) Consumer Unit Upgrades
Recently, I was called to a property in Loughborough where an old Wylex rewireable fuse box kept blowing the lighting circuit fuse. The homeowner wanted the problem resolved, but they also wanted the fuse box upgraded and moved to a height where they could reach it more easily.
I’m Adam Willett, and I bring 20 years’ experience to consumer unit upgrades. On this job, the age of the installation and some obvious non-compliant electrical alterations meant I recommended checking the existing wiring before fitting the replacement.
If you’re considering a consumer unit upgrade in Loughborough, I take the same approach: understand the installation, explain what needs doing and agree the price before the upgrade goes ahead.
Back to top2) A fuse box upgrade starts with the existing wiring
For the Wylex installation, I recommended an Electrical Installation Condition Report, or EICR. This would establish the condition of the electrics and identify any remedial work needed before we replaced and relocated the consumer unit.
I sent the customer a quotation covering the EICR, upgrade and relocation. Once they accepted, I carried out the inspection and testing, then listed the required remedial work in the report.
I updated the quotation to include those repairs and waited for the customer’s approval before booking the installation. We then completed the remedial work, upgraded and relocated the consumer unit, and tested and certified the work.
This gave the customer a clear understanding of what they were paying for. It also meant we addressed the existing defects alongside the replacement, rather than leaving them connected to a new board.
Back to top3) What I include in your consumer unit replacement
I design, supply, install, test and certify your replacement consumer unit. My quotation includes materials, full testing, certification and building control notification.
During the survey, I assess the existing installation and discuss what you want to improve. That might include replacing an outdated fuse box or, as with the Wylex job, moving the unit somewhere more accessible.
The main benefits are improved electrical protection, easier access and a properly tested installation. I explain the proposed work so you understand what the upgrade will achieve and whether anything else needs attention first.
Back to top4) How I organise your fuse board upgrade
Your consultation, survey and quotation
I start with a free phone consultation. You can tell me about your existing fuse box, any recurring faults and whether you want the replacement moved.
I arrange a site survey within 3–4 days, then email your quotation within 3–4 days of the visit. If I recommend an EICR or further investigation, I explain why and include the cost for you to consider.
Your booking and installation
Once you accept the quotation, I book the next available installation date. You get a confirmed date and time, with reminders.
A typical upgrade takes 4–6 hours. Relocation or remedial work can take longer, so I discuss the expected duration and the interruption to your electricity beforehand.
After completing the work, I provide the required certification, arrange building control notification and invoice you for the agreed job.
The final connection checks matter
One detail I pay particular attention to is checking that all terminations are secure after testing.
Testing is an essential part of the job, and I also double-check the connections before completing the installation. I want the finished consumer unit to be properly connected as well as tested and documented.
This final check is part of my installation process.
Back to top5) Elucian consumer units and manufacturer warranties
I use Elucian consumer units, with a 10-year manufacturer warranty on the enclosure. The MCBs, RCBOs and AFDDs have three-year manufacturer warranties, subject to the manufacturer’s terms.
I explain the equipment included in your quotation and select the protective devices to suit the installation. You can see what I’m supplying and how the manufacturer warranties differ from my workmanship guarantee.
Back to top6) Clear prices, including VAT
My consumer unit upgrades typically cost £600–£1,200 including VAT. That includes materials, full testing, certification and building control notification.
I provide a fixed price for the agreed scope before installation. If an EICR identifies repairs, I explain the findings and update the quotation for your approval before carrying out that additional work.
The Wylex job followed exactly this process: inspection first, an agreed revised quotation, then the repairs and upgrade.
Back to top7) Speak directly to me
I answer enquiries and book the work myself, so you speak directly to the person organising your upgrade. I aim to respond within two hours, depending on urgency.
We are an NICEIC Approved Contractor, with 45 five-star reviews. I provide a 12-month workmanship guarantee, with eligible domestic work also covered by the NICEIC six-year Platinum Promise, subject to its terms.
Whether you’re a homeowner or landlord searching for a consumer unit upgrade near me, I can talk through your existing setup and arrange a survey.
Tell me about your fuse box and what you would like to improve. I’ll start with a free phone consultation and explain the next steps, so you can make a decision with a clear quotation in front of you.

Helpful, efficient great quality.
